Cerebral Palsy is a medical condition caused by a permanent brain
injury that occurs before, during, or shortly after birth,
with
most cases being diagnosed before the age of three. Prematurity is a
factor due to a prolonged delivery or traumatic delivery, which can
cause intracranial hemorrhage. Any situation that interferes with
fetal oxygen can produce brain damage and cerebral palsy. It is
characterized by a lack of muscle control and body movement. The three
major types of Cerebral Palsy are: Spastic, in which there are

reflexes, muscle spasms, and increased tendon
reflexes; Athetoid, with purposeless, uncontrollable movements and
muscle tensions; and Atactic, in which the child has poor balance,
poor coordination, and speech defects. Although there is no cure for
Cerebral Palsy, there are numerous therapies available that make it
possible
for a child to have a successful life. With the right
knowledge,
families can immensely improve the quality of their child’s life. |
